On August 28, 2026, International student Nesma Baaziz successfully defended her doctoral dissertation in a public examination at the Postgraduate Program of UIN Alauddin Makassar. She was declared to have successfully completed her doctoral studies in the field of Islamic Civilization History with a “Very Satisfactory” distinction.
Nesma completed her doctoral studies in 2 years, 11 months, and 27 days, achieving a final grade point average of 3.89. Her dissertation and responses to the questions posed by the examination board received a score of 4.00. During the session, the Head of the Examination Board announced that Nesma had become the 1,725th doctoral graduate of UIN Alauddin Makassar.
The academic defense was chaired by Prof. Dr. Hasyim Haddade, M.Ag., Deputy Director of the Postgraduate Program of UIN Alauddin Makassar. The dissertation was supervised by Prof. Dr. H. Abd Rahim Yunus, M.A., as Promotor, with Dr. Hj. Haniah, Lc., M.A., and Dr. H. Andi Abdul Hamzah, Lc., M.Ag., serving as Co-Promoters.
The examination board consisted of Prof. Dr. Hj. Amrah Kasim, Lc., M.A., and Prof. Dr. H. Abdul Wahid Haddade, Lc., M.H.I., as internal examiners. Meanwhile, Dr. H. Yusri Muhammad Arsyad, Lc., M.A., a lecturer in Sharia Economic Law at Universitas Muslim Indonesia (UMI), served as the external examiner.
In her dissertation, titled “Human Effectiveness in the Development of Islamic Civilization According to Malik Bennabi: Malaysia as a Model,” Nesma examined the central role of human beings in building Islamic civilization. The study highlights that civilization depends not only on material resources, but also on effective human development, proper use of time and resources, education, strategic planning, visionary leadership, and strong values. Through Malaysia’s experience, the research presents a partial model that can offer lessons for Muslim societies while emphasizing the need to adapt these principles to each society’s unique context.
The doctoral defense was attended by Dr. Serliah Nur, M.Hum., M.Ed., Head of the International Office of UIN Alauddin Makassar, several international students, family members, and other guests.
Following the successful defense, Nesma expressed her gratitude to the International Office of UIN Alauddin Makassar, particularly to Dr. Serliah Nur, for the guidance, support, and assistance she had received throughout her academic journey at UIN Alauddin Makassar.
