Makassar, September 25, 2025 — The International Office of UIN Alauddin Makassar held a scholarship and study program socialization with Kumamoto University, Japan. The event took place at the Senate Hall, 4th Floor of the Rectorate Building. It was part of the International Office’s effort to build more international networks and give students wider chances to study abroad.
The event invited Mia Hernawati, Liaison Officer of Kumamoto University, as the main speaker, and was moderated by Sahara, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D, lecturer at the Faculty of Science and Technology, UIN Alauddin Makassar, who is also an alumna of Kumamoto University. In her remarks, Head of the International Office, Dr. Serliah Nur, M.Hum., M.Ed., said that the partnership with Kumamoto University is a great chance for UINAM students to continue their studies in Japan.
“Japan is a developed country with excellent systems in education, technology, and a strong culture of learning. We hope this collaboration will build strong relations and cooperation between UIN Alauddin Makassar and Kumamoto University,” she said.
The International Office hoped that the event could motivate students to prepare themselves better for global opportunities. During her presentation, Mia Hernawati explained the strengths of Kumamoto University, especially in science and technology. The university has around 10,000 students, including 500 international students from 45 countries, with Indonesia ranked second in number of international students. She also shared that Kumamoto University offers the MEXT (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship, which covers tuition fees and living costs. Scholarship holders are also allowed to work part-time (arubaito) to earn extra money.
“Students can save about 20,000 – 30,000 yen per month from the 80,000 yen scholarship and part-time work,” she explained.
Through this program, the International Office of UIN Alauddin Makassar showed its commitment to support students in reaching international study opportunities. The International Office will continue to guide students in scholarship preparation, application processes, and future collaborations with Kumamoto University. The program is expected to encourage more UINAM students to study in Japan and to strengthen the role of UIN Alauddin Makassar in the global academic community.
