Sengkang, October 2, 2025 – The Head of the International Office of Alauddin State Islamic University Makassar, Dr. Serliah Nur, M.Hum., M.Ed., accompanied by several international students from Alauddin State Islamic University Makassar along with the Cooperation Coordinator Ismi Sabariah S.A.B., M.Adm., SDA., and cooperation staff Fadhil S.H., attended the opening ceremony of the 1st International and 8th National Musabaqah Qira’atil Kutub (MQK), held at Campus III of Pesantren Islam As’adiyah Macanang, Majauleng District, Wajo Regency.
The International and National MQK were officially opened today by the Minister of Religious Affairs of Indonesia, Prof. Nasaruddin Umar. The 8th National MQK is joined by 1,360 santri (Islamic boarding school students) representing 34 delegations from across all provinces in Indonesia. Meanwhile, the 1st International MQK is participated in by 10 Southeast Asian countries, with Indonesia as the host, involving a total of 60 participants. In addition, observer delegations from Kazakhstan, Egypt, Myanmar, and Kuwait, comprising 20 representatives, also attended the event.
The International MQK serves as a significant forum for preserving Islamic intellectual traditions, particularly in the study and recitation of classical Islamic texts (kitab kuning), as well as in strengthening transnational academic networks. The presence of the Alauddin State Islamic University Makassar delegation underscores the university’s commitment to advancing Islamic knowledge and fostering intercultural dialogue.
International students from Alauddin State Islamic University Makassar play a pivotal role as cultural representatives and active observers during the event. Their involvement not only enriches the competitive environment but also creates opportunities for cross-cultural interaction with participants and observers from other countries. Through this experience, the students gain a deeper understanding of Islamic scholarly traditions in Indonesia, expand their academic networks, and enhance their appreciation of diversity within the global Muslim community.

“Grateful to attend this event and meet new friends” added Muzammil from Sudan.
“It’s honorable to join this event. I Hope to join this event again next time” said Ilham Jehleh, another student from Thailand.
With the participation of international students, the International MQK is expected to serve not only as a competition but also as a platform for cultural exchange and broader intellectual engagement.
